Wondering if it’s possible, appropriate, or even tolerable to train BJJ on your period? You’ve come to the right place! As a team of brown and black belt women in Jiu Jitsu, we are experts on the matter of BJJ and periods.

The short answer is yes - you can absolutely train BJJ on your period. Exercise is known to help with period related cramping pains and the endorphins you release when you roll will help with your mood.

Here are some hygiene tips for training Jiu Jitsu while on your period:

  1. Keep everything as clean as possible. Take some baby wipes with you to the bathroom right before class and give everything an extra once over before you get on the mats.
  2. And while you’re in there, change your tampon, pad, or clean out your period cup. Start class as fresh as possible.
  3. Repeat the same steps right after class. Good hygiene is key!

Pro tip: Invest in some of Gaidama's revolutionary women's Jiu Jitsu spats or grappling shorts. They all include a built in sweat wicking liner where it matters most to give you an extra layer of protection and peace of mind when you're ready to roll on your period.

All that said - if you have really intense, debilitating cramping, it’s totally okay to give yourself a couple days of rest, as necessary.

The wonderful thing about Jiu Jitsu is that it will always be there for you!
