Are There Hair Rules in IBJJF?

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) does not specify exact hairstyle requirements.

However:

  • Hair must not interfere with safety

  • Hair accessories cannot contain metal

  • Hair should not create hazards for opponents

Loose hair may be flagged during inspection.

Best IBJJF Competition Hairstyles

For tournaments, choose:

  • Cornrows

  • French or Dutch braided pigtails

  • High pony braid (secured tightly)

Avoid:

  • Loose buns

  • Large claw clips

  • Metal pins

  • Bulky scrunchies

Competition Day Hair Checklist

✔ No metal accessories
✔ Hair secured tight to head
✔ Test during hard rolls beforehand
✔ Extra hair ties in your bag

Why Secure Hair Matters

During collar ties and back takes, loose hair can:

  • Obstruct vision

  • Get pulled

  • Cause discomfort

  • Distract you mid-match

Preparation reduces stress.
